Responsible Travel: How to Achieve a Smaller Community Footprint

Responsible travel means that in addition thinking about our “carbon footprint”, we need to also consider our “community footprint”.

This means we need to consider the social and community impact of our choices. We need to think about how our trip will affect the people and places that we’ll be visiting.

When you travel, you’re not just visiting a place – you’re joining the community there. Your actions and choices have a direct impact on the people, culture, and environment around you.

That’s why it’s important to think about the social and community impact of your travel choices. By choosing responsible travel, you can help preserve the culture and environment of the places you visit. You can also help make the local communities more prosperous and better able to take care of themselves by practicing sound environmental stewardship.

So what does responsible travel look like? In just about every situation, it means choosing a destination that is a good fit for you, and then taking steps to minimize your impact once you arrive.

Steps You Can Take Toward Responsible Travel

Thinking about where to stay? Avoid city center Airbnbs. These are often owned by people who are making a quick buck by turning apartments into hotels without upgrading the facilities. These kinds of short-term rentals are bad for housing supply. Local tenants are often forced out of their neighborhoods due to rising prices caused by owners snapping up hundreds of properties to use as short term rentals. They also frequently result in increased noise and disturbance to residents who live in the same building.

Traveling within a city? Consider using public transportation. Not only is this more environmentally friendly, it’s also less expensive than using a car service or taxi.

Visiting a religious site? Try to be respectful and not disrupt the sacredness or peace of the site. Dress appropriately for places of worship. Follow the local customs and regulations. Don’t touch artifacts or buildings. Avoid taking photos without permission.

Traveling internationally? Pack your passport and other important documents with you. Know the local customs about tipping and gift-giving. Follow local laws and customs about the use and consumption of alcohol, drugs, and firearms. Be prepared to deal with medical emergencies in unfamiliar environments. Use local currency. Wear appropriate clothing for the climate. Learn a few phrases of the language, and download a translation app to your phone.

When you travel, think about the social and community impact of your choices. By doing so, you can help preserve the culture and environment of the places you visit, and make the local communities richer and more prosperous.
