What Makes River Cruising Magical?

River Cruise
AmaWaterways

It’s Different

In 2016, when I took my very first river cruise to Paris and Normandy, I remember being a bit apprehensive about the whole experience. The ships are smaller (about 140 passengers), and there’s not a lot of “entertainment” on board (compared to ocean cruising). Quite frankly, I wasn’t sure that my 16 year old was going to enjoy the experience. But boy, was I wrong!

Excursion Options

We were both pleasantly surprised by the variety of excursions offered each day. In fact, we ended up being quite active and doing lots of biking and hiking. Other guests chose from alternate tours, and there always was a “gentle walking” group for those who needed something less strenuous.
My son was not the only teenager on board (there were several others), and we enjoyed our time of being immersed in Normandy. Some of my favorite memories are of visiting various local markets, hiking in the hills, and our chocolate making class in Rouen.

Friendly Guests

The other guests on board were friendly and welcoming. Guests are encouraged to dine with different people each night, and we met so many of our fellow guests this way. Each day was a new adventure with fun people and our fantastic local guides. At night, there was often entertainment in the lounge. One night we all walked into town for a spectacular light show at the local cathedral.

Outstanding Dining

Every evening there was a refreshed menu. The food was excellent, and the nightly menus often highlighted the local cuisine and wines. The meals are expertly prepared by the kitchen staff and artistically presented. We also dined one night at the “Chef’s Table”, where a small number of guests sample from selections prepared by the chef as guests watch.

Personal Service

With such a small number of guests, the staff, cruise manager, and crew really get to know you. The staff to guest ratio is often about 1 to 3, and the service is personal, friendly, and sincere. The reception desk was able to help with virtually any request, and the wait staff takes excellent care of you. The level of service is akin to that of a top-notch boutique hotel.

Unpack Once

We’ve taken a river cruise every year since then, and it’s become the highlight of our year. As a result, it’s now our favorite way of experiencing and being immersed in the destination with the added convenience of unpacking once (and not needing to worry about getting from point A to point B). River cruising provides the perfect mix of being able to spend quality time together and experiencing historic places and new cultures.

Come Sail with Me

Join The Fun!

We’ve met some of the most friendly and welcoming people on board (both guests and staff), so it’s always difficult to say goodbye to our new friends. I sincerely hope that you can experience the same (either solo or with your family/friends), and I hope that you can join me on an upcoming sailing. I’d love to share the magic of river cruising with you!
