The Million Dollar Question
I recently attended a fundraising event and found myself being introduced to people who were interested in what I do professionally. As a Travel Advisor, one of the questions that I am frequently asked is, “How do you compete with Expedia or Travelocity?”. The answer to that is very simple, I don’t. The online DIY booking engines are not my competition. Just like online legal advice is not competition for my attorney, Turbo Tax is not the competition for my CPA, and E*TRADE is not competition for my Financial Planner. Online booking engines are not a replacement for working with a qualified Travel Advisor.
I welcome this question so that I can provide information about what Travel Advisors do and how we are different from booking online. First and foremost, we assess needs and ask the right questions to determine travel style, desires, and “must haves” for a particular trip. In most instances, we ask A LOT of questions to make an informed assessment about what may be a good fit for this particular client on this particular trip.
What Do Travel Advisors Do?
We build relationships and get to know each and every client, so that when they call, we have a history to work with. We know where they’ve been and where they’d like to go. We know what’s on their “bucket list”, and we can identify opportunities for them to make these dreams a reality.
We also provide support before, during, and after travel. We are constantly responding to inquiries prior to travel (such as: what forms do I need to fill out, what amenities are offered by my hotel/resort/cruiseline, when is my final payment due, and what if I need to cancel?). If something goes wrong during a trip, we endeavor to make things right before it’s too late.
When you call a Travel Advisor, there’s always a friendly voice on the other end of the phone during business hours who will take the time to listen and respond to any questions, concerns, or additional requests. There are no queues or menus through which you have to navigate to speak to a live person. When we pick up the phone, we know exactly who you are, where you are (if you’re traveling), and what plans we have in the works for you.
It is only through this personal, high-touch, customized service that we’re able to deliver exactly what our clients want. I assure you that Expedia and Travelocity don’t do that.
Who We Work With
Some people enjoy the DIY approach and want no assistance. Maybe they’re seeking the lowest possible pricing or chasing the best “deal”. They’re willing to take a gamble with their travel plans. Those are the consumers who may go online and book their arrangements themselves.
There are others who want to ensure that their next trip is exactly what they envision, and they value the services of a professional to put it together for them. They may not have the time or inclination to spend hours sifting through dubious online reviews and comparisons or go over their itinerary with a fine tooth comb to ensure that everything is in place. These are the travelers who will seek out a professional Travel Advisor to ensure that their next trip is memorable, unique, and hassle-free.
